I've heard good things about these types of cars. Are they really that great when it comes to driving them around a track? Also, are real Caterhams worth it? Would it be better if I could just build myself a replica?
They're very, very maneuverable. They also have great acceleration, though they usually have low top speeds, if that even matter to you.
You could build one yourself, but, (no offense intended) it probably wouldn't be as good unless you're quite confident in your abilities. If so, cheers!
No offense taken. Anything built by skilled craftsmen using the proper tools will be much better than something built by a 17-year old idiot with a Craftsman tool set. It's great fun though...
One thing about the top gear thing, a repeat was on on one of the satellite channels, is that they had all the proper and correct tools. It would cost thousands to buy all the proper ones if you don't already have them, and I am guessing that you would not have most of them.
Working stiffs can usually finish a replica car in 1-2 years, but it means that's pretty much all you do for most weekends. Lots of DIY replica projects have been abandoned because they just lose enthusiasm for the build.
