i always thought chicagoland was a term made up by people from that area as an informal nickname (like potown or pk for poughkeepsie or chilangolandia for mexico city), but then i saw it on a map tonight at b&n  .

Chicago is the only town that gets to get away with that.

You don't hear about NewYorkland or Los Angeland or Bostonland areas.

Not too many folks at all.

.... I was thinking a local meet or something but doesn't look like there are enough members in the area here.

Boston's got Bo-town (rare), the Hub, the City on the Hill, the Walking City, Beantown (most common).

I dont quite get the point of making the name longer as the nickname though. Silly Chicago(land).

Chicagoland is really not a nickname for the city, it's a way to describe the area. The area of the city and the nearing burbs.

You don't really say I'm going to go visit Chicagoland. But you do say that an ice storm is going to hit Chicagoland. That way people understand that we're all screwed, not just the city.

Ah, so it's just like the Lower Mainland nickname for the Greater Vancouver area.

I'm in Central WI - kind of a bit to drive - getting people together in milwaukee (if there were people actually here...) would work out awesome.
