just would like to hear an explanation about this if possible, thanks.
I'm not sure why that is, but I read a while back, when the ford GT came out, that it did like 206mph in 5th, and only 205 in 6th. Regardless, thats still fast, but I still can't understand how that works, unless the air resistance keeps the less power of 6th gear from going quite as high of rpm.

Powerband. The Ford GT doesn't have enough power to accelerate faster at that speed in 6th, with all the wind resistance. A car can usually accelerate faster with a lower gear ratio, so it can go a little further in 5th. 6th is probably for cruising.

6th gear in the Ford GT is probably like 6th in the Pontiac GTO - without wind resistance, the car can theoretically go 260 mph. In the real world, the picture isn't so rosy.

Higher top speed in lower gear

Post by uh2lsaab »

In 6th gear the engine can't get enough torque to spin past XXX mph at the associated rpm. However, in 5th gear, the engine has more rpm available before hitting redline and doesn't need as much torque to accelerate beyond XXX mph.

If you look at a torque curve for a car engine, it tends to drop off before redline. This accounts for part of the phenomenon.

I think that's one of the cool things about your car. In October I spent over an hour driving my buddies in the mountains and was shocked that I actually had to use 5th.....errrr...we'll say I would have needed to use fifth to get to 100. Hard acceleration is very busy....shift..beep..shift...beep...shift...beep...shift..beep...shift and the next thing you know your going pretty fast. :)

Oh yeah, I also learned not to let off the throttle in the middle of a turn.

hahaha yes that's the STi in a nutshell. lots of shifting going on. i like the short gears. i especially like that 3rd is my all purpose gear instead of 2nd. i just wish 2nd, 4th, and 6th were a little taller. they corrected that with the 07s. ppl are thrilled they can finish the 1/4 in 4th.

man, I wish 3rd was my all purpose gear, or even 2nd. My 2nd is useless for cornering, so I have to downshift to first going like 25mph, and then I'm slowed down to about 15 by the time I actually take the turn.

I forgot my gear ratios but my transmission has a 3.77:1 FD. It feels like there is a big gap between 4th and 5th, most of the time I don't shift to 5th until 45-50 mph.

2002 Subaru WRX Impreza on stock wheels

Gear Ratios

2 : 1.947:1
3 : 1.366:1
4 : 0.972:1

now a n00b question: how do i read all of this? and does this tell me whats the ideal speed for each gear?
