now i see how this works b/c everything is still, so there's no rotational speeds to match. but my question is, is it bad in any way for the car?

Well, I'm no pro in car mechanics, just trying to learn the stuff - but honestly, I see no reason why would it be bad for your car. Simple physics: no rotation, no differnece between clutch in and clutch out. Actually - with clutch in, it's worth cause you wear the throughout bearing.

have anyone else notice that it is harder to get in gear without the clutch down when the car is off? or is it just me?

I've noticed it. That's why I always push the clutch before manipulating the stick.

Hmm... Maybe it has something to do with misalignment of the teeth of the gears? It doesn't seem a great deal to me, though. As long as the gear engages, that is.

that's what I think too. Since the clutch is still connected to the flywheel, I think teh misaligned teeth has a harder time lining up, whereas if the clutch is down, there is no load on teh tranny so teh teeth could just slip into place

Yes, just as chrono mentioned, it's because of misalignment of the dogteeth. If you declutch, the engine is disconnected so the tranny is free to move, thus the synchros can turn the gearbox shaft a little bit so as the dogteeth can engage.

It's bad if you're matching the revs exactly. You might not hear the grinding, but if you're pushing on the shifter before it gets in, it will grind.

Sorry, completely missed the "car off" part. Duh. My bad. I thought at first you were talking about shifting w/o the clutch while driving.

And in any case it seems you have put an 'if' instead of 'unless'... That is, it should go "It's bad unless you're matching the revs exactly", in case the engine is running.
