lol I'm so cheap
There's quite a bit of mis-information in this thread.
Going down hill while leaving the car in gear and without stepping on the gas pedal, the engine does NOT necessarily shut off the gas flow completely. I cannot say for other car makes, but on newer BMW's, the gas flow does not shut off until the RPM goes below 1500 while coasting and not stepping on the gas.

Yeah, some cars do not shut off gas flow completely... but either way, the gas usage is very minimal. The point is you should NEVER coast down a hill in neutral, the best way is to simply shift UP to 5th gear if you want to "coast".

We recommend staying in gear as much as possible, as so to have more control to the car and to keep the motorgoing in the event of an (unlikely) engine failure. In turn, that keeps the various power accessories alive a bit longer.
Also, coasting in gear keeps the engine spinning. Therefore, the engine isn't idling (as it does when out of gear) and isn't using any gas. When you are coasting and idling out of gear, the engine idles as if it is at a stop, using more gas than if you leave the car in gear.
