Post by ClutchDisc »

I've driven cars with a soft clutch pedals and with stiff clutch pedals.

My preference is for the soft clutch pedal. What do you guys prefer? Soft or stiff?

Well, I guess you get used to it. I had a F150 and the pedal was stiffer than that of my Ranger so it took me a while to get used to the Ranger. I have driven cars with very soft pedals, you hardly feel them at all, it's kind of weird but you get used to it. What I don't want is a sore knee, but unless you get a racing clutch it should not be too stiff. So I guess I like the stiffer pedal of the non-racing type clutches.

I've usually used "heavy" and "light" to describe it. "Stiff" makes me think of it not moving freely, like its hinge is rusted in place and it gets stuck halfway up.

I definitely dislike an excessively light clutch pedal. I weigh 220 pounds and used to be an avid bicyclist, as well as having been in construction (including a lot of carrying bundles of shingles up ladders). I have pretty hefty, strong legs and they work better with a decent load. With a light clutch pedal I don't feel like I'm pushing or letting up the pedal, I just feel like I'm moving my foot around in the air, and that's difficult for me to modulate well.

The ridiculously light clutch pedal was one of my complaints about my 2008 VW, and the heavy clutch pedal is one of the things I like about my 1980 Buick conversion.

I tend to agree with the wording preferences of Moofasa.

I like a heavy clutch.

My heart says heavy clutch, my left brain says heavy clutch, my right brain says heavy clutch, my left knee says light clutch, and my left knee has the veto power here.

Heavy. I like to be reminded of the beefiness of the machinery I'm manipulating.

Heavy and predictable.

The clutch in Gizmo, my friend's Jetta - so named because it's starting to succumb to VW electrical gremlins, is too light and I feel as though I will break it. Also, if you're not dead on with engagement it tends to feel as though you're walking over gravel.

The clutch in Clifford, on the other hand, is fantastic. I know right where I am and how much further I need to go before it is fully engaged.

The clutch in my Banshee was heavyish, but got distracted easily.

Medium. Or somewhere in the middle. Don't really like either extreme.

I also noted that the Ford Focus had one of the best clutches ever in terms of balance between comfort and road/engine feel. Not too heavy, not too light, just right. It was easy to tell where the engagement point was and therefore I was able to get nice smooth takeoffs and shifts every single time.

I kind of like the soft side of medium. When I test drove the Fit, I was amazed. The clutch was perfect, I didn't get too used to the engagement points, but it felt really good. When I went to take my civic, I could barely press the clutch in because I grew accustomed to the lighter clutch. Also on the more tiring days I feel the lighter clutch to be more of a friend than a foe.

I once sat in a VW 5 cylinder, the clutch was so light I thought I was going to go through the floor. Just like tankinbeans said.

I like a clutch that's like leg-pressing 9000 lbs. And a knife-edge friction point, more like an on/off switch. It may sound weird, but its easier for me to modulate. I have a hard time with really light clutches and friction "points" that take up most of the clutch travel, harder to feel it out.
