Wasn't there a guy a few months back that started a thread saying he was learning standard on his new 911?
Maybe he said he was thinking about getting a 911.....I can't remember.

Two pedals, two feet, too easy.

I think he said he dialed 911 on his cell phone when he kept stalling trying to launch it on a hill with traffic behind him.4onthefloor wrote:Wasn't there a guy a few months back that started a thread saying he was learning standard on his new 911?

That wasn't me, but I did learn standard on my new (to me) M3. I read all the introductory threads on here about shifting, and I jumped in headfirst! Getting out of the dealership parking lot was a proud moment for me...no joke.4onthefloor wrote:Wasn't there a guy a few months back that started a thread saying he was learning standard on his new 911?

Although I was familar with shifting the gearshift lever as a kid in my dad's truck, I actually learned to drive stick on my brand new 87 Mustang GT back in the day. I was 18 at the time and I drove it home from the dealership (a 12-mile drive--all back roads) without stalling a single time. My dad was in the passenger seat, so I felt more comfortable than I would have otherwise. Before we pulled out of the dealership, he asked me if I wanted him to drive the car home. I just said "no way" and laughed at him. I think he just wanted to drive my new car.andytothemax wrote:That wasn't me, but I did learn standard on my new (to me) M3. My Z was ~$36,000 back in 1990. Which means in today's bucks it's ~$60,000.
However if I were to sell it today, I'd probably get $8-10k for it. I paid $7500 for it but I've done several thousand in parts and several thousand in labor as well.

My car was $13,188 new which is $19,597 in today's money. Damn, you cannot get an optioned up Corolla for that money these days. Even with inflation, prices have still risen.

Well, a back-to-factory mint-condition restoration for sale will set you back around $50,00094Corolla5Speed wrote:The Goat boys on this site are probably in the running. Alfa's Alfa maybe? New purple Scion tC guy (forget his name)
Mine is nowhere near that nice.
Will be someday, though. >_>
Re: Top 5 most expensive cars owned by forum members?
Sorry guys, but I have to laugh at how this thread suddenly became a "...in today's money" conversation. That's all fine and well, but just because you have a used car that had an original purchase price of $30,000 when it was new 15 years ago doesn't mean you have a car that would cost $60,000 today. Instead of looking at it that way, it's more likely that the 15-year-old car was purchased for a few thousand dollars, after depreciation did its thing.
My 99 M3 had an MSRP of $42,000. If I were to buy a 99 M3 today, I'd probably pay about $5,000 or $6000. A new 2011 M3 has an MSRP of approximately $60,000 before adding any options.
Moral of the story? Inflation is a bitch, but depreciation is a far bigger bitch. At least your salary rises along with inflation (or at least it should), allowing you to afford such purchases in the first place.

The original question was vague. Perhaps "Who paid the most for their car" would have been more clear.

"Okay, so who owns the most expensive cars on the forum (manual trans only)? I see a lot of members with older cars and/or economy cars. Does anyone have anything new and/or expensive with a manual transmission?"theholycow wrote:The original question was vague. Perhaps "Who paid the most for their car" would have been more clear.
I thought it was pretty clear. I was just trying to see how many people here owned newer, expensive cars. Somewhere along the way people started talking about how much their older cars would have cost when the price is adjusted for inflation.

The cheapest '11 M3 costs $162,892 here so while inflation is a bitch and depreciation is a bigger bitch, taxes don't care about "exit only" signs...Shadow wrote:A new 2011 M3 has an MSRP of approximately $60,000 before adding any options.

Dad's 2006 Mustang GT Premium (with Shaker 1000 audio) set us back $29,850 in the fall of 2005.
It's selling in excellent (based on Kelly Blue Book) of $17,825.
