Who here can launch and get all the way up into high gear without touching the gas pedal? Can all cars do it, or does it require a decently torquey engine?

The Rabbit's engine is no torque beast, but with its short gears I can get all the way up to 5th in a parking lot without touching the gas pedal.

I suspect that the DBW that you so despise might have more to do with it than the torque of the engine. In other words, just because you are not touching the gas does not necessarily mean the computer isn't.

Obviously I can, too considering I have the same car. However, I was also able to do it in a '86 Civic. It just took a really long time.

I can do it. I launch, stop, turn the car off and put it into 5th.

Wtf is this? I've never even tried it before. How the hell can you no-gas through ALL the gears? Typically from what I've seen, if I leave any of my cars at 1000 rpms in 1st with no gas they'll just keep moving at that speed. I don't see how you could shift to 2nd unless you were above 1500 RPMs without lugging the f**k out of the engine.

I have lugged like hell though. When my Dad lived at his last house I used to play around with the gears on my '86 driving through his neighborhood. Now, usually I'd go through at about 2000-3000 rpms in 2nd gear. A few times I put it in 4th gear though to see what it would do (I could push it home from that distance) and a few times I cruised through his neighborhood at like 500 RPM's or something crazy in 4th. The rpms were so low that the oil light almost came on, it almost didn't have enough RPMs to maintain proper oil pressure.

Quite easy. Just release the clutch slow and the speed with slowly rise as well. Same with the next gear.

Good point! DBW isn't required for the computer to give it some throttle, though; the IACV probably has enough range for that.

Do any cars without DBW and without cruise control have throttle actuators that the computer can operate?

When it's cold and idleing at 2000rpm I can get into 3rd and 25mph without touching the gas.

Also, with some VAG cars - the computer will modulate the throttle to prevent stalling the engine (in some situations).

I think that everyone needs a G-Charger.

hmmmm, i don't think my torqueless 4 banger could do that

i've no-gassed thru the first 3 gears, but come on thats enough clutch slip. why don't you go roll back and forward on a hill for fun aswell.

There's very little torque at idle RPM, this very little clutch wear, Kirk. Rolling back and forth on a hill is much worse.

But if you sit there with the clutch at the friction point for 5-10 seconds trying to get the car moving with no gas doesn't that cause wear?

I tried it today in my 4-speed '86 Fiero and it worked. The car was hot so it was idling at 800-900 RPM's and it didn't want to go very fast but it did it. I found a nice empty stretch of road, did a no-gas start in 1st gear, let it rev it up to 1500 with no gas, shift to 2nd, again up to 1500, etc, until I was in 4th gear (final gear) at about 25 mph at 1200 or so RPM's. The car accelerated really slow but it did it just fine.

With time friction will cause wear but a regular launch wears your clutch more than what you just did in that experiment. Again, because of torque. It's a safe bet you were using much more torque to launch than doing this earlier.

let it rev it up to 1500 with no gas

How did it rev up to 1500 with no gas if it was idling at 800-900?
