Street racer escapes cops

Post by Leedeth »

Woot woot! It's actually possible.

But on a more serious note, WTF. Cops need to relax, these guys haven't killed anyone yet, and there isn't even a quarter mile drag strip here. All there is is a 4/10-mile oval and a 500-foot drag strip: http://www.westernspeedway.net/facility.htm

And this is total bullsh1t, because he wasn't even going 100 mph. Pat Bay is the only highway straight and large enough to do this kind of thing, unless you go up-island a few hundred km to Inland Island Highway 19. And the curves on Pat Bay are pretty sharp, you probably won't want to be taking them at 100 mph.

Speed conversions:

200 kilometer/hour = 124 mile/hour (mph)
180 kilometer/hour = 112 mile/hour (mph)
150 kilometer/hour = 93 mile/hour (mph)
100 kilometer/hour = 62 mile/hour (mph)
80 kilometer/hour = 50 mile/hour (mph)

Saanich has growing street racing problem
Canwest News Service
Published: Wednesday, April 09, 2008

Two vehicles tore down the Pat Bay Highway in Saanich at speeds of more than 180 km/h last week, in what Saanich police say is an example of the growing problem of street racing.

A 17-year-old man was eventually caught by police after an officer recorded his Nissan 300ZX at 150 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the highway near McKenzie Avenue Friday, said Sgt. John Price, police spokesperson.

The other vehicle accelerated to more than 180 km/h as it headed south and rounded Vernon Avenue by Saanich Plaza, said Price. Police were unable to catch the car, and it was travelling so fast it was out of sight by the time the officer had retrieved his radio, said Price. There was no description.

The 17-year-old received a $483 fine for excessive speeding, a 15-day driving prohibition and a $109 fine for not displaying his new driver sign. His vehicle was also impounded for 48 hours.

"We're seeing two or three of these a week," Price said of high-speed races.

Police ask anyone who sees street racing or dangerous driving to phone 911. Officers were able to catch two Ford Mustangs racing on the Pat Bay Highway March 21 after witnesses called police to report them.

PSFT! that's nothing! If the guy was caught in Ontario, that's minimum $2000 fine (maximum $10000), suspended drivers license, and 7day vehicle impound...

are you serious? going nearly twice the speed limit doesnt bother you? just because he wasnt going over 100 doesnt mean he wasnt street racing. or that he wouldnt have gone over 100 if the cop didnt show up.

if they would have killed someone it would already be too late.

Correction:

There needs to be a regulation drag strip.

And maybe a track. Srsly, who's gonna pay to run on a 4/10 mile oval?

And yes. Limit should be 110km/h (70mph) like in the most parts of the states.

Ah, sure, you won't, but never overestimate the intelligence of unintelligent people.

RIGHT! They are way over reacting. Definitely should wait until they kill someone, or heck, a couple people at once, before cracking down on retarded street racing.

It's all fun and games until you kill someone, right?

Even if there is no one on the road except for you and the police, you still deserve to get pulled over and ticketed. What happens when there is a bump or imperfection down the road and then you lose control. Bam! Your car is messed up, your probably going to the hospital or dead, your parents will have to plan your funeral or pay your medical bills, and you have to pay the cleanup costs for the mess you just caused. There are way more reason for police to pull you over.

Yeah, street racing is dangerous, especially when an inexperienced 17 year old is behind the wheel who just got his licence.

That fine of $500 total was not enough. I agree with Canadian rules for the most part.

The only rule I don't agree with is the destruction of the car. Impounded, auctioned off, whatever sure. But destroying a car is just wrong. :)

Good to see an anti-street racing mentality around here. I'll support the 5-0 on this one.

Hey I don't condone street racing, but you gotta do what you gotta do. That is, until they build a proper track.
