2001 Accord vs. Mustang GT

Post by wertt »

First race ever. Yeah... you can imagine how this played out.

I was stopped at a light on a highway, in the right lane. Open pavement stretches ahead.
Up in the left pulls a middle aged dude in a new Mustang GT, beautiful car. His young kid is sitting in the back seat.
I see him look back at his kid and say something. Kid nods.
I smile at the dude, and rev the engine. I can tell he's seriously intimidated by the sound of a 2.3 litre 4 cylinder harnessing 150hp.

Light turns green, I make a surprisingly good launch with a chirp of the tires, and scream up to 5500rpm in first gear (first time ever!).
As I shift to second and flatten the pedal again, he floats by me with a roar, like I'm standing still, and cuts over in front to turn in to a restaurant on the right side of the highway.

I shake my head and laugh.

This part I don't understand.

That said, that's a fun little story; I wonder what exactly the father and son said to each other...

And on a side note, I thought the '98-'02 Accord I4 made closer to 170hp? EDIT: wikipedia tells me I'm wrong.

Its a small four lane regional highway, speed limit 80kph, not like a wide freeway. I was wondering what he said too...probably "don't tell mom I did this" :D

That's an unfortunately unclear piece of language. "Highway" means different things to different people.

To me, it used to mean a limited access (no bicycles/pedestrians/horses/etc) high speed many-laned road with no intersections that is entered/exited by ramp and has no houses/businesses (except government-created rest stops which may have shops or restaurants). I now use the word "freeway" or "interstate" to describe that, although there are interstates that don't match that description in some places.

I think that the most accepted use of the word "highway" is for any road that has a route number.

There are also legal definitions that mean any public road/street where motor vehicles are allowed. That's the definition used on cart/wheelbarrow tires that are stamped "not for highway use".

Yeah, this road is actually marked Highway 50. In Southern Ontario there are a lot of these types of roads, Highways 9, 7 etc. Larger expressways with many lanes, ramps and no signals all start with 4--, like 400, 401 etc., but are also called highways... :?

Heh yeah, here in vancouver we have a "highway" with stoplights, pedestrian crosswalks, sidewalks, the skytrain (public transit), and malls and shops on the side.

Where abouts in S. Ontario are you? I live in S. Ontario too and I was actually on the 7 the other day. 407 was closed so I had to detour onto the 7 through Markham. God I hate driving anywhere near the GTA.
Two pedals, two feet, too easy.

I live in Toronto proper, and try to avoid driving as much as possible! That said, when the 400 series or Gardiner is clear, (say 8am Sunday morning) you can blast anywhere in 15 - 20 minutes.

Yay for Lougheed Highway. Some days it's still faster than Hwy 1 though.

I think in Canada (or at least BC), some of our highways are what you'd call "expressways" in the US--multi-laned, high speed limit in some sections, but cuts through suburban/urban areas with intersections, crosswalks, businesses, etc. US "freeways" are the intersectionless, high-speed roads. So for us Vancouverites, Lougheed Highway = expressway and Highway 1 = freeway.

...then there's the Coquihalla and other rural highways.

LOL @ the race.

But really, some people don't know what a little honda can put out.

In my case not an accord but an rsx.

A 2.0L 4cyl @ 210hp is quite an achievement for stock.
Those 4 bangers can make hundreds of hp and tq if you use them right.

Don't think your accord could take the stang out but any K-Series motor could
