Re: Getting used to a new vehicle's clutch
Interesting. I'll note that my son (Clutchdisc) started leaning on my Ranger. He bought the S10 before he was ready to drive a stick and continued to learn on the S10. It was easier for him, partly because 1st gear is about 8 percent deeper on the S10 and partly because the clutch was easier to enga...

Snow on clutch shoe, slips on pedal, what to do????
This really bugs me. You walk through snow, then get in and your foot is slipping around on the clutch pedal. I hate that. What do you guys do, carry a small stiff brush to clean off your shoe? Stomping my foot does not seem to help, especially if there is nowhere to stomp but in snow.

Do you leave it in gear at a red light?
I am curious as I have heard some people do this. I would NEVER leave it in gear through a red light, holding the clutch pedal down the whole time. It has to be bad for the release bearing. It could also result in a launch into traffic if you get distracted or your foot slipped off the pedal for som...

Getting used to a new vehicle's clutch
I have had three F100/150s with the big torquey 4.9L inline six. Drove that type truck with manual transmission from 1977 through 2011. So after 34 years of that I got a 4-banger Ranger with manual transmission. I'll tell ya, the transition to the smaller truck lower bottom end torque engine was len...

Re: Launching in 2nd?
I don't normally launch in second. I used to have a highway geared '84 F150. It had a 2.7x rear end and 4 speed OD. When I got my '95 F150 it had a 3.3x rear end and a 5 speed OD. Second gear in the '95 was just a tad taller than first was in the '84. It was pretty close and I thought about launchin...

Refinished my wheels last fall
with an aerosol spray bomb! Before: http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/InlinePaul/rustywheel.jpg After (note the overspray): http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/InlinePaul/RangerWheel.jpg Now, after all winter long, they look worse than before. Maybe come warmer weather I'll get some fl...

Re: New Member From Michigan
Those one cylinder motorcycles were sometimes called "thumpers." I recall that BSA made a single cylinder 500 cc bike. What beastly bike. As you know, the bigger the cylinder typically means greater torque. But if you want massive torque you have to check this out: http://www.vincelewis.ne...

Clutch Changeout Issues with Hydraulics
I just had a new clutch in the Ranger (2001) at 80,000 miles. They put in the disc, pressure plate, pilot, release bearing, and a new slave. I got the truck back and the engagement was at the floor. There is not adjustment on the pedal and the shop said these Ford hydraulic clutches are a real pain ...

Re: Redline MTL vs factory gearbox fill
I like Redline MTL. My former truck, a '95 F150 that had the Mazda M5OD 5 speed, spec'ed ATF in the manual tranny. I tried Mobil 1 ATF, Redline D4 ATF, but it was the thicker Redline MTL (the basic MTL, not the thicker ones that state the weight in the title) that finally got rid of the notchiness i...

Re: New Member From Michigan
Now that would be nice. But I do have a stash of 196 quarts of engine oil in my cellar. None is Redline though. Some Amsoil, some M1, a ton of Maxlife in regular, synthetic, and Nextgen. Why so much? Apocalypse preparedness? All were obtained on special deals. For example 76 quarts Nextgen Maxlife ...

Re: New Member From Michigan
I still can't quite wrap my mind around how a 3 cylinder engine works. I always thought there had to be at least one cylinder in each stage of the combustion cycle (intake, compression, combustion, exhaust) at all times, and with fewer than 4 cylinders that's not possible. For that matter the I5 in...

Re: New Member From Michigan
Welcome, Paul! I'm a recent fan of inline engines as well; hope you enjoy your stay here! Thanks. I love inline engines. The six is the most beautiful being perfectly balanced, but I'll go for a 5, 4, 3 cylinder if it is the right situation. Anything over 6 though I have to go V unless I want a cla...

Re: New guy from Michigan
Small truck + manual trans = WIN For Sure. Like my 2.3L Ranger pickup. You can wind it out and lurch the vehicle on the 1-2 shift, have a blast and still not be going insanely fast. Just as much fun, a lot safer. Here in michigan the salt ususally destroys the truck long before the engine can wear ...
