Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

So... it actually grinded when I tried to move it into 1st gear at like 3 mph without rev matching/double clutching. Do you guys think something's up with the syncromesh, or just 1st gear is really sensitive? Thanks.

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

Mine is brand new and I'm the first owner. The only time I could have abused it was when I first started to drive and didn't know I couldn't move the shifter into 1st gear at speeds around 20-30 mph without letting go of clutch. I've done that less than five times. I figure it shouldn't be enough to...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

Hey guys. I was wondering if there's anything special I need to do to downshift into 1st gear. My car resists when I try to downshift from 2nd into 1st at about 4-7 MPH. I know I shouldn't force it in, but I end up doing it sometimes because I feel like it should work. Is this a sign of something wr...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. Another new question :) My car requires me to push down to shift into reverse. Am I supposed to push down to shift back into neutral? I know I can do it without pushing down, but then there's a loud noise from it popping back up once it nears the center. I don't kn...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

Hi Guys. I've been driving around for almost a month now and definitely much better. Got some more questions. So, I've been hearing differing opinions about if it's bad to shift without the clutch when the car is off. I like to do it just for fun and I hope I'm not damaging the car. I have noticed t...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

Do you recommend adding gas while releasing clutch on an upshift, or just push-in, shift, and let out really fast? If you can do the second one smoothly enough for your comfort, that's my preference. Both techniques are acceptable. Also, today, I brought it up to like 6000 RPM in first gear and qui...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

So I lied about when part 3 was coming. My bad! Everything I wrote up so far was background information, but none of it addressed your questions about shifting smoother. So I'm going to finish that up today (though not right now). EDIT: okay, maybe tomorrow - work got pretty busy today. Sure. Take ...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

It is extremely unlikely that you could have caused any problem like that. Most likely the gearbox is just notchy or crunchy and you didn't have the experience necessary to notice it before. Haha thank you. I think I'll just try to worry less and practice for now. This is the first car I've ever ow...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

Thank you for that great explanation. I've got a much better picture of the situation now. I definitely intend to read more, just haven't found the time. While researching a weird sound from my gearbox, I suspect I may have worn down my synchros a bit by shifting directly to 1st gear too early when ...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

That resistance is the synchronizers doing their job, pushing back against you until they complete their task of synchronizing. It's exactly the sort of thing I expected you to notice about shifting into first gear at 30mph. The more resistance you encounter, the more work the synchro is trying to ...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

New question guys, about the amount of resistance. How much resistance is too much? Sometimes the shifter goes in very easily and I feel satisfied, but sometimes I feel some resistance to it and it takes a bit more effort to push in. I'm not sure if this is a sign I'm doing something wrong or the re...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

Thank you everyone for all the help. It's been very helpful. Just one last question for now.

Is it bad to shift the gears without the clutch when the engine isn't on? I'm not too sure about this one.

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

Here's something else that will improve with practice; you'll overlap your clutch foot and shifter hand motions so you begin moving the shift lever just as the clutch pedal reaches the floor, and then just as the shift lever reaches the '1' position your clutch foot will already be on the move. New...

Re: How much damage do these beginner mistakes cause?

Some people like to leave it in whatever gear it was already in until they get down to idle RPM, then shift to neutral and continue slowing, then just before the light turns green put it in 1st. Another question about wearing out my car. So, I want to make the distinction that I am talking about mo...
