Re: please critique what I'm doing

I think double clutching has improved my rpm matching a lot. I'm not all that worried about syncro wear, but feeling how it goes into gear is a lot better than looking at the tachometer. I drove my mother in law's new Honda fit a few weeks ago. It felt like I was playing a video game. The clutch and...

Re: please critique what I'm doing

just tell her you're practicing some advanced driving techniques. this thread is too long (tl;dr), but i thought i saw something about acceleration laws in here. it was brought to my attention a few years back that, at least here in NYS, you can be pulled over for accelerating too quickly. i forget...

Re: please critique what I'm doing

Holy crap, a question about manual transmissions. I can't remember how long it's been since we've seen one of those! You'll get the hang of DCHT with more practice. Why do you feel like you're getting further from teaching her? Because when she is the passenger I'm doing silly shifting rather than ...

Re: please critique what I'm doing

Okay, so I've been away (on my regular forums, sorry I can only handle two at a time). So back to the original topic; Since I'm driving in 5th all the time; to take a turn onto a side street a downshift is needed...so I got pretty smooth with a heel toe. But then I started playing with double clutch...

He's planning on putting another engine in it. He's got a few spares from when he worked at the scrap yard.

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

A guy I work with finely got his 944 on the road. Such a wonderful heap of rust. The guy who inspected it gave him so gripe for the tail light full of moss. Still a sweet little ride.

Maybe my stoned friends were not the best representative of RI driving.

Re: Woman New to Driving Stick Gets Hit by Train

Really people were driving normal parking lot speed, then full on floored it just before the bump. Seems like a lot of people in that state drive: flooring it, holding speed, or slaming on the brakes. Nothing in between even when it's snowing. I think that's the time in my life I grew a phobia of no...

Re: Woman New to Driving Stick Gets Hit by Train

Yup, further proof you learned to drive in RI. http://allofftopic.com/images/smilies/roflsquared.gif Actually I and my dad seem to be the only ones who do that. Seems like 50%+ people did it at the whole foods/ Petco plaza on north main st in Providence, at least when I lived there a decade ago.

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

Turns out iTunes 10 does not like my (old as sh*t) original iPod video. Which is fine by me, because I dont like the new layout. Downloaded iTunes 9. Happy iPod, happy me. Any idea how it does with the third generation iPod? I haven plugged that into anything in years, I should just to see if turns...

Re: Woman New to Driving Stick Gets Hit by Train

Me, I see "speed bumps" as meaning I should speed the hell over them so instead of bouncing all over the place I just have a quick, painless "thumpthump". If I'm behind someone else I'll stop ahead of time, wait for them to clear, get a running start, then brake after going over...

Re: Teaching my wife to drive a manual

I've all but given up trying to reach the few people who don't know how in my group. They have absolutely no concept of having to change gear. We'll be barreling song in a parking lot and the engine will be screaming. I'm usually like "you need to shift now" and they just stare But it's i...

Re: Teaching my wife to drive a manual

My wife hates any driving. She has had people try to teach her stick before, but really doesn't think she can do it. The first lesson with me she got going without the gas pedal on the first try, so I think she gets it the hardest part. The local community college has a nice parking lot and school j...
