Re: Perfectly smooth upshifts-trick with disengaging the clu
What happens if you don't give it gas, under exactly those circumstances? Revs ought to drop the rest of the way, just the same. When I don't give it gas, I get the head toward the windshield jerk. If I give it gas during this time, I'm either neutral or pressed slightly back into the seat, which t...

Re: Perfectly smooth upshifts-trick with disengaging the clu
Hmmm... so you're increasing revs for an upshift? That sounds odd.... Unless your revs have already dropped to idle before you get on the gas. Almost, not quite though. I'll get to this in a second. I don't remember what vehicle you're driving. 2013 GTI 6MT. So as far as increasing revs for the ups...

Re: Perfectly smooth upshifts-trick with disengaging the clu
1... 2... 3... A combination of these was the solution. After reading most replies about slipping it longer and giving more gas, I did some good ole' experimenting. My goal was to floor clutch before engine breaking, move to next gear, let off clutch and get to friction point, then basically "...

Re: Perfectly smooth upshifts-trick with disengaging the clu
you need to feed it some accelerator pedal. Exactly this. I was experimenting over the weekend and this worked wonders. I was trying the alternative where it seems like I would wait ages for the RPMs to drop low enough to be perfect in the next gear. Question though is does this increase clutch wea...

Re: Perfectly smooth upshifts-trick with disengaging the clu
Unless you're shifting just above idle RPM you don't want to have the throttle fully closed. The key is to find the throttle position that would result in neither acceleration nor engine braking before the clutch begins engaging. Boring, I'm actually having problems with the revs not dropping quick...

Re: Perfectly smooth upshifts-trick with disengaging the clu
This has been the most singularly helpful thread for my driving yet! Now the only problem I'm having is how to reengage the clutch and apply power. OP, would you take us through your process beginning with step 4.? i.e.: 5. Clutch is fully floored, gas is fully off, and gear shift has moved from 1 t...

Re: Driving in different shoes/sneakers
Definitely agree on the dress shoes part. I'm keeping my PUMAs with the rounded heels in the boot for just this reason!

Re: Atlanta Standard Shifter
Nice avitar too, Soundbear! Thanks! I ripped it off the Panda Marine icon from Starcraft 2 haha. You've picked a good car to start with, it's the easiest manual I've ever driven. Also, agreed that the GTI is a super easy drive; very forgiving. Not including the 2 stalls in a row this morning up tha...

Re: Atlanta Standard Shifter
Wish I knew a numeric value, but it's pretty hefty. Was definitely thankful for the VW hill assist in the beginning.

Re: Driving in different shoes/sneakers
Being a new manual driver myself, I find a profound difference between different types of shoes. Went off to work in my fancy To Boot New Yorks with hard leather soles and found that 30 seconds down the road I had no feel for the clutch! Definitely a hair raising experience, but a valuable lesson le...

Re: Hand position while driving?
It's funny, ever since getting the GTI I go for the old 10 & 2 more often than I ever have before. Must be something about the firmer suspension...

Atlanta Standard Shifter
Hi all, I've been lurking ever since I purchased my 2013 GTI a couple of weeks ago, but I thought it was about time to start posting. I'm new to driving manual and having a great time! (The steep grade in stop-and-go morning traffic not included) Specs on the GTI: Candy White, 4 door, 6MT, Wolfsburg...
