Re: Fast Highway Entry Launch?

Sorry to bring a sorta dead thread up but: If you need to launch fast to turn during a green light at an intersection, then obviously you are in a situation where its unsafe to turn left. Screw the guy behind you that's honking. It's your life that's on the line, not his/her. If it is at a left turn...

Re: Anxiety about slight inclines

Definitely go with Option 2 or Option 3. Option 2 makes you get used to the clutch - add a little gas if the car feels like it's jerking (i.e. the engine is working too hard) Option 3 initially scared the crap out of me too. But you realize the amount of roll back is minimal by the time you start th...

Re: Scared about slowing down and speeding up.

Just be patient and keep on practicing. I know its very scary when you're learning, especially at a hilly stop sign. Dammit, after 3 months, I am still nervous sometimes <-- this leads to screwing up. Just remember not to be afraid at all about clutch slipping. Like you mention, slip till you're com...

Re: explain why to rev match?

So catch the right rev while its going up from the blip rather than overshooting and catch it when its falling? Hmm.. I have to try that. It seems it will need more coordination than catching it while it falls

Re: explain why to rev match?

Not exactly. Push in the clutch at 50, shove the lever into 3rd, then don't goose the throttle, but press it down to raise the rpms and hold at the higher rpm as you engage the clutch. I would forget heal toe, which is across the accelerator pedal and brake with one foot, unless you are doing road ...

Re: Higher RPM vs Weight to start car from stop in 1st gear

Just a quick update:

I've been doing more no-gas launches while waiting for red lights. The car stutters a lot less now due to practice, and I get a bit more power from the car. It seems the ECU have learned the driving style.

Thanks guys!

Re: To rev or not to rev

I have been trying to keep the rev's low for starts. Once you get the right rev's, you will feel your car 'liking' it. However, as a newbie at manual still, I still tend to push the gas too hard once in a while and the revs up to 2000rpm. When that happens just let the revs drop lower before you sta...

Re: Higher RPM vs Weight to start car from stop in 1st gear

It doesn't stutter as much after doing it for 20 times, but you can really feel how the motor is trying to pull the car at that low RPM (on average around 500 RPM) to get momentum. It just seems there isn't much low end torque and the car struggles at such low speeds. I would think this is not a go...

Re: Higher RPM vs Weight to start car from stop in 1st gear

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Just a quick reply ... at work.. :) a) Revised my statement re: AWD taking longer slip. That really depends on the driver's experience with the car. b) So, I went out to a safe location and tried no-gas launches over the weekend. It is very much do-able with the WRX...

Re: Higher RPM vs Weight to start car from stop in 1st gear

So far, everyone seems to be agreeing that it takes slightly longer clutch slipping from a stop to get an AWD going due to a comparatively higher energy loss. I think most people would disagree with that. Unless I'm reading the thread wrong.... The amount of clutch slip between an AWD car and a FWD...
