Re: please critique what I'm doing
Geetings, So I haven't been driving stick for long, but first learned to drive on one, so I've been frustrated by the lack of control for many years now. So; The car '04 matrix, 1zz-fe and a w59 (1.8l straight four and a 5speed). Mostly I just drive to work, and back 7 miles each way. Two stop sign...

Re: Back in a Manual and It Feels SO GOOD!
Seems to me, that's a bit like continuing to throw Hail Marys just because the last one worked out. I don't know football but I thought a Hail Mary is a crazy difficult pass that almost never works but you try it because you're out of options. Here we have something that's proven to work every time...

Since I'm new too, allow me to add... I'm in a similar position to the OP, but for the most part have owned Toyota trucks my entire life. I recently owned an '05 Tacoma auto trans...Every vehicle I'd owned up to that point was a manual, but I was living in DC and dealing with heavy traffic, and dec...

Re: jerk free shifts
I have a mazdaspeed3 and whenever I shift i push clutch in, shift, clutch out slowly, then gas it. However when im pushing in the clutch the rpms fall to idle like levels and then when i release clutch theyre rising back up so i guess it causes the slight jerk. This mainly happens when im going fro...

Re: Balance gas and clutch pedal on every upshift
Like others have said, don't obsess about minimizing the time spent between clutch in and clutch out. I'm sure you heard it from someone or read it online that slipping your clutch is bad. Don't focus on that, instead experiment to find out what gives your smooth starts and shifts. A little shift s...

Re: Normal for car to jerk in 1st when taking foot off gas?
To answer your question, if you take your foot off the accelerator quickly while you are in first gear, the car will jerk in most cases because you transition from engine power to engine braking very quickly, and since first gear is so low, everything is amplified. The higher the RPM, the more pron...

Re: 1>2 shift
As someone who has been driving manual for 16+ years, I have a lot of experience with this. Most likely, you'll get better with time, but some cars are mechanically just easier to shift smoothly than others. Personally, I have found with most of the cars I've owned that there is a "sweet spot&q...

Re: Do you leave it in gear at a red light?
Sometimes I'll just leave my foot on the clutch, especially If I'm driving in the city and don't anticipate the stop to be very long. Most of the time, however, I'm too lazy to NOT put it in neutral as I come to a stop!

Re: Weird Emergency Brake Issue . . .
Nothing to do with your first post (most likely), but forget about the parking brake for hills. It's great for learning to drive a manual, but if you know what you're doing, my best advice it just forget about the hill. Unless you got a jerk up inches behind you, it's not necessary...seriously, forg...

Re: 1>2 shift
3. Practice more with "shift into second as soon as I get rolling" until it is smooth When I really focus on this, I can get the 1-2 shift reasonably smooth while still accelerating acceptably from standstill. Problem is don't focus on it enough. With time and miles, you will learn...

Re: 1>2 shift
The problem may be that you are hesitant to shift while turning... I've been driving manual transmission for, oh, well, close to a million miles across several vehicles, and I found that early on the reason I would have bad shifts at intersections is because I would unconsciously not shift through a...

Re: Parking brake reminder / warning
With the exception of one, I've always owned manual transmission vehicles, and I always leave it in 1st when parked and apply the parking brake...just force of habit, even on level ground. With one car I owned ('91 MR2 Turbo), the E-brake would always get stuck when temps dropped below 20 F...so I a...
