is Smooth or quick shifting better?

just curious for racing is better to be smooth with the shifts or really quick? because in the situation where your taking the RPM's almost to redline...when you shift and want to rev match for smoothness then you need to wait a bit for the RPM's to drop which im assuming might slow down your times....

well that makes sense, but how can i limit or avoid that?
they say that a good driver makes it so smooth it seems like they are driving an automatic....but automatics don't really do that. so i must be missing something here :?:

Jerking forward on clutch press??

Ive really been working on smoothing out my shifts and my timing with releasing the clutch and correct RPM's is getting better....but there is one thing I cannot figure out. my problem is whenever I press in the clutch I (or anyone in the car) lurchs forward. It almost defeats the purpose of timing ...
