Re: Downshift while braking (not ht)
I avoid that situation by heel-toe. I have more control because if the car in front suddenly stops, I can clutch in and brake since my foot is already on the brake.

Re: left foot braking video
Walter Rohrl used left foot braking too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyVHj3sHVHQ Yeah, but notice his right foot let go of the throttle when he left foot braking. I think this left foot braking goes back to the Lilian Gilbreth's study where you eliminate inefficient hand-and-body motion. By usin...

Re: Upshift At Higher RPM
Most people get nervous when shifting at higher RPM and dump the clutch. The result is a very rough transition. Relax and you see what I mean.

Re: left foot braking video
If you feel the need to brake then why would you still use the throttle? I don't understand left foot braking.

Cars with low torque are hard to get smooth transitions at lower RPM.

Re: Breaking down engine braking?
Best way to engine brake is: (assuming going from 4th to 2nd let's say) Clutch in move shifter to neutral clutch out blip the throttle to about where the revs would be in 2nd at that speed clutch in move shifter to 2nd This way puts the least wear on your synchro's. Modern syncros are good enough s...

Re: Downshifting not giving power
Not enough power, downshift. Not satisfied with the power, get a different car! Something to take into consideration when you purchase a car!
My car is 6-speed, in city, to pass another car I would need to downshift to 4rd because 5th does not give much power!

Re: Beginner Questions
1. You downshift as you coming to a stop if you want to be in gear. 2. Engine braking does not hurt the engine. 3. True, for an emergency, you slam on the brake and the clutch at the same time. There is no need to put back in gear unless you are planning on get moving again. If you are planning on g...

Re: Exiting/Driving in Underground Garage, and 1st Gear Question
I am assuming that you suspect your friend didn't know what he was talking about. You are right. He's an idiot. You can run in first gear all day without damaging anything if the speed is around 3-5mph, crusing that is. Shifting to 2nd gear at those speeds would cause engine sluggish.

Re: Low gears
Shifting early doesn't mean you'll get better gas milage. You could bog the engine and get the worse gas milage.
