I begin my commute at about 6am, so alertness is an issue for me. The joys and fun of driving help keep me alert until I get to my office, where I promptly nod off at my desk.

I try and look at the tach at no other time than when I'm fearing redline. Mine is somewhat low, so going WOT in second, for example, is one time when I'll glance at my RPMs. But not when launching or shifting.
