All cars (unless you defeat it) lock out the starter to ensure the engine is disconnected from the wheels before cranking the engine. Manuals require you have the clutch down, automatics require you be in P or N. In the U.S., that is. European cars can be started in neutral without the clutch down ...

I did all my driving lessons in a manual car, so yes. Over here, if you learn and pass your test in an automatic car, you get a licence that's restricted to automatics only (which hardly anyone would want, since manual cars are the majority here).

For me, it's first gear for short stops (stop signs, waiting to turn left, etc.) when I want to be ready to move, and neutral for long stops (lights, picking up passengers...) to rest my leg and avoid jumping forward.

But since the question was about long stops: NEUTRAL here :)

Okay, admitted, I've only ever driven with people from Germany, Hungary and Russia. But still, how does that relate to my point that the "in gear v in neutral" choice is really just a matter of personal preference?
